Conscious Bodywork

Unraveling Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

With the widespread use of computers, carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injuries (CTS/RSI) are quickly becoming the leading cause of workplace absenteeism in the United States. But computer operators are not the only ones affected with these maladies. Cashiers, hairdressers, massage therapists and countless other professionals can be seen wearing wrist braces in the line of duty. Allopathic medicine treats these conditions with anti-inflammatories, cortisone injections and ultimately surgery.

Charley Horse

Some people call them muscle spasms, some refer to them as a charley horse, but a muscle cramp by any name is still painful. They can occur in the middle of the night, during a tennis match or following a long run. You don’t have to be a dedicated athlete to have a muscle cramp; it’s a “pleasure” we all get to experience.

Reaching Out

Massage Emerges as a Lifeline to Dementia Patients

A Crabbèd Old Woman

The body it crumbles. Grace and vigor depart.
There now is a stone where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass, a young girl still dwells,
And now and again my battered heart swells.
I remember the pain, and I remember the joys,
And I’m living and loving all over again.
And I think of the years, all too few, gone too fast,
And accept the stark fact that nothing will last.
So open your eyes, nurse, open and see
Not a crabbèd old woman,
Look closer: See me.

Soft Tissue Massage and Infertility Treatment

Clearing the Way

It was nearly five years ago when massage therapist Larry Wurn and his wife Belinda, a physical therapist, made a startling discovery. “We were surprised when a patient we were working on became pregnant,” said Larry Wurn in a recent interview. Qualifying this statement, he went on to explain that the woman was being treated for myofascial pain at the time. Seven years earlier she had been diagnosed as having blockage in both fallopian tubes. Since that time, she had remained infertile despite being sexually active.

Into the Looking Glass

Massage for Mastectomy Patients

Kate was 35 years old when she was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in her left breast. A modified radical mastectomy was performed and the breast was gone forever. It was several weeks later when the emotional shock set in. She thought, “Oh, God, what did they do to me? Where is my breast? In the hospital trash? Is it in a jar of embalming fluid? What did it look like? Was it in pieces or chunks? Couldn’t I have taken it home and buried it?” She felt the need for closure with her loss. She wanted a mourning process with her breast.1

Craniosacral Therapy and Spinal Cord Injury

Potentially Great Benefits

Although individuals with disabilities can greatly benefit from various bodywork modalities, they generally do not avail themselves of these therapies for a variety of reasons. Relying largely on the advice of conventional health care providers who are often skittish about referring for bodywork, those with disabilities often don’t know their “alternative” options. In addition, because many bodywork professionals are unfamiliar with the unique issues associated with disability, there is apprehension when dealing with this population.

Bodywork and Parkinson’s Patients

A Strong Combination

The incidence of Parkinson’s disease in the United States is estimated at 1 million, with an additional 50,000 patients being diagnosed every year. While it is generally considered a disease of those between 50 and 79 years of age, incidence below the age of 40 is rapidly increasing and epidemiologists suspect environmental influences are playing a part in this phenomenon.1 Noting that Parkinson’s is still essentially a disease of aging, the likelihood of caucasians coming down with the disease is 2.5 percent.

What in the World is EDRF?

Enhancing Circulation in Peripheral Vascular Disease

EDRF. It stands for Endothelium Derived Relaxing Factor. I first made its acquaintance in 1978 when I was summoned by the neighbor of an 18-year-old client, John. This client was an incomplete quadriplegic as the consequence of a minor car accident; John’s condition required my thrice-weekly presence. After the neighbor saw the tremendous progress John made, for which I received completely unjustified credit, she chose me to save her father’s legs from amputation. Despite my protestations, she implored me to at least meet her father. Reluctantly I agreed. Well, why not?

Running Injuries, Part 3

Russian Sports Massage and Hamstring Strain

Hamstring injuries can be extremely frustrating to the runner. Small tears that seem insignificant can lead to major problems if left untreated. Prevention is usually the best cure. Therefore, it is important that runners maintain good flexibility. A stretching program is very important. As a former coach and runner, I prefer a ballistic type of stretching which mimics the range of motion that occurs during the activity. Certain types of running drills can be an excellent form of stretching. Muscles should be thoroughly warmed before beginning any kind of stretching program.
